Biography
Jabara Eris was born on Bajor in the port city of Jalanda in the Hedrikspool Province, seven years before the end of the Cardassian Occupation of her planet. There she grew up amidst the tragedy, heartache and courage of her people's struggle against the grey-skinned oppressors ... and even to this day, the pain of its mental scars continues to haunt her and those still living who experienced it.

Like many Bajorans, Eris came from a family whose members were fiercely dedicated to fighting for their rights. Not only were both of her parents freedom fighters during the Occupation, but even after the invaders had left, Eris's mother Marika was strongly involved in the anti-Federation "Bajor for Bajorans" movement. Also, her uncle Jabara Gueta was a devoted member of the Maquis, the militant group which worked to protect multi-species colonies which the Federation had given to the Cardassians during an ill-thought "peace" treaty. Jalanda, with its mild seasons and lovely beaches, would have been a wonderful place for a young girl to grow up during peacetime. Eris's father Tarel was both a moderately successful fisherman and a Prylar with a local congregation. Along with attending every one of her father's services, Eris would often go to sea with him on his trips -- during which she would at times look up at the starry sky and wonder about someday traveling into the unknowns of space. Eris's mother had her own business on shore, running a small but popular cafe which was acclaimed for its wonderfully spiced hasperat ... and which also served as a safe haven for rebels to share information and find emergency shelter. It was there Eris, as a young child, first learned some of the important skills, such as field medicine and emergency treatments, that would guide her later path in Starfleet. The Jabara family was deeply spiritual, and throughout her life Eris has held an intensely deep devotion to the Prophets -- to the point that during her teenage years it was almost a foregone conclusion she would eventually enter into the services of a monastery and, like her father, become a Prylar, with her life centering around seeking the wisdom of the Prophets through meditation, the study of holy scrolls, and serving the spiritual needs of the residents of her community. After the completion of her religious training, she was sent to live in a small farming community in the quiet hills of the Dahkur province. There she served as a Prylar for the people who made the area their home, helping guide them through the good times and the bad as their spiritual leader and advisor ... through birth and through death, at peace in her role of being a conduit for the Prophets' wisdom in the midst of daily life ... after not only the hardships of Cardassian rule, but also a long and brutal war by Starfleet with the Dominion, a conflict that centered around the blessed Celestial Temple in space so close to her home planet. As the years passed, Eris continued her calling, helping the people in her village, with no desire to leave. One day, however, Eris was surprised to experience a deeply strong feeling that the Prophets were calling her to help those beyond her planet. This came to her after a long period of intense meditation in the temple where she served, and following extensive contemplation on her experience and discussions with Vedeks and other religious leaders, Eris concluded her Pagh was leading her to bring the peaceful truth of the Prophets to other races, and to also ease their physical and mental (and spiritual) troubles in the process. With that in mind, and partially inspired by her aunt Jabara Talia (who had served as a nurse on Deep Space Nine and later elsewhere as a doctor), Eris applied to Starfleet, and was accepted into the Academy's Medical Program ... and, when requested and required, she continues to don her Prylar robes, practicing her devotion to the Prophets in all ways those around her need.
