Biography | |||||
There’s very little that people would consider ‘remarkable’ about Sarafina Sharreal, aside from her mere existence and her chosen hobby. Fina is possibly the only mixed race being who is half Rihannsu and half Betazoid. She is certainly the only native of Betazed to ever take up (and master) the Great Highland Bagpipes, a fact which absolutely did NOT endear her to her family’s neighbors.
Physically, at least outwardly, Fina appears predominantly Rihannsu. The only exception being her naturally wavy, almost curly hair, which is a most uncommon trait among pure Rihannsu. Internally however, Fina’s physiology is a unique blending of Rihannsu and Betazoid, which makes medical treatments a challenge for physicians. Her paracortex (the telepathic lobe of the Betazoid brain) is as fully developed as those of any ‘pure’ Betazoids. Yet, telepathically, Fina is only in the 25th percentile while her empathic abilities are in the 80th. It is in Fina’s psychology where her mixed biology appears to clash the most. The old adage about Rihannsu holds true in Fina’s case: "The Rihannsu are very moral. They have an absolute certainty about what is right and what is wrong, who is a friend and who is an enemy, a strict moral compass which provides them with a clarity of purpose." However, her innate, opposing racial psychological traits, Rihannsu vs. Betazoid, often leave her unsure of the best methods to use in achieving her goals. ((Think on this. A Rihannsu will use aggression or even outright violence if they feel the situation truly warrants it. Whereas for Betazoids, strict pacifism can be considered to be a racial trait.)) One way in which Fina attempted to deal with this inner conflict was to think of her maternal grandmother, Ael (Meaning ‘Winged One, named after the famous Rihannsu Empress Ael t'Rllailleu). Having grown up hearing stories of Ael, who like her namesake of long ago was a Khre'riov (Commander-General) in The Fleet, Fina would often ask herself, “What would The Winged One do?” and try to work out the answer. Aside from the stigma of being ‘a half breed’ with seriously reduced telepathic abilities, Fina’s childhood was fairly typical for the daughter of affluent parents on Betazed. Her childhood home was on the site of the old Troi mansion, which her father had purchased not long before her parent’s wedding. While the house and property were beautiful, Fina had never liked it. She swore the place was haunted. She claimed she regularly heard a woman’s stern voice commanding her to “Stand up straight, Little One! DON’T SLOUCH!” or “APPLY YOURSELF, Little One! People will one day depend on you!” (Fina was always noted as having good posture for a child, as well as excellent study habits. She also inexplicably grew to have an affinity for hot chocolate.) ((Go figure!)) One of Fina’s Great Passions was watching tri-vid historical docu-dramas. She had all the episodes of ‘Battlecruiser Vengeance’, ‘The Bloodwing Voyages’ and ‘Battlestar Galactica’. Her collection also included the movies ‘The Final Reflection’ which chronicled the life of Klingon Captain Krenn sutai-Rustazh and ‘The Sword in the Empty Chair’, which was the story of Rihannsu Empress Ael i-Mhiessan t'Rllailleu. However, it was her ‘Star Trek’ collection that would lead to her second Great Passion as well as her career choice. Seeing the episode ‘By Any Other Name’ and the movie ‘The Wrath of Kahn’ at age 7 was Fina’s introduction to the Great Highland Bagpipes. Fina’s father was certainly less than thrilled with his daughter’s choice of musical instrument ((Don’t even THINK of saying that bagpipes don’t qualify as a musical instrument!)), but his only stipulation was: “If I get them for you, you must master them.” And Fina did just that, becoming Pan-Federation Junior Highland Piping Champion at age 15. But ‘Star Trek’ was to affect Fina in a much deeper, and very unexpected way. For her 13th birthday, Fina’s father gave her the full set of ‘Star Trek Continues’ episodes. The second episode of the series, ‘Lolani’, left young Fina on the verge of tears, yet also furious. Asking herself the question, “What would The Winged One do?” resulted in months on pondering, backed up by much research into fields such as ‘Rights’ and ‘Freedoms’. Finally, the question yielded only one answer. The next evening, Fina approached her parents after dinner, and informed them that she had something important to tell them. She explained to them how she felt after watching the Star Trek Continues ‘Lolani’ episode, how she researched and found that things like slavery and a myriad of other evil, injustices and oppression are rampant in the universe. She told them how knowing that there are so very many beings who are unable to protect or even try to defend themselves sickens her. She went on to quote the preamble of the Federation Charter, and then repeat two lines from it: “...to reaffirm faith in the fundamental rights of sentient beings, in the dignity and worth of all lifeforms…”. She explained to them how she felt that those were the two most important lines in the entire document. After a pause, Fina went on to tell her parents, “You’ve given me a very good, but sheltered life. Until just recently, I didn’t know how terrible life is for some beings. But now that I do know, I can not ignore it. No matter how much, or how little I may be able to contribute, I’m going to join Starfleet and do what I can to fight to protect those who can not protect themselves. Mnhei'sahe demands it of me.” With those words, Fina’s parents knew that their little girl had grown up and was well on her way to becoming a woman to be reckoned with. That night as Fina prepared for bed, The Voice came to her again. But this time, it was neither stern nor commanding. Instead, it was tender, almost loving as it spoke the words, “Little One? I am so very, very PROUD of you!” With a smile, Fina left her bedroom and quietly padded down to the kitchen for a cup of hot chocolate. | |||||
