Biography | ||||||||||||||
I was born in the year 2388 on the planet T’Khasi, which humans call Vulcan, to Solvek, a has-talsu pa’essu (medical doctor/general practitioner) and akan-ha-talsu (xenobiologist) serving with the Vulcan Science Academy, and T’Linn, a tor-talsu wihk’kek (theoretical physicist) and yel-tor-talsu (astrophysicist). T’Lara is the feminized version of the name Lorot, meaning “bearer of information.”
I did not know my father. I am told he was with my mother when I was born but soon after left on assignment aboard the Vulcan science academy research vessel Tal’aksa Hali, which was subsequently reported lost with all hands in 2390. Shortly after my father’s reported death, my mother took an assignment on Mervidiam, a scientific research station in orbit around a rare trinary star system that included a gravitationally-locked, orbiting pair of neutron stars and a white dwarf in a distant orbit of the pair. The system is located near the Orion nebula, 1,183.22 light years from the rimward edge of Federation space. It took us 1.047 standard years to travel there at warp 8.25. The station had been built and was primarily staffed by Vedarans, a small, etherial species native to that region of space and station gravity was set to the standard of their world, equivalent to 0.617 standard Vulcan gravities; this is why I am so tall (6’10”). Before I returned to Vulcan, I had to undergo osteo- and myogenic remediation to develop my bones and muscles sufficiently to endure Vulcan gravity. I still have some difficulty handling higher gravitational fields. Two years after our arrival at Mervidiam, when I was five years old (2393), my mother died during a mission near the neutron stars. Her shuttle lost control and crashed into one of the neutron stars, vanishing in a brief burst of gamma rays before being laminated, a molecule thick, onto the surface of the star. Having no remaining family on Vulcan, and limited opportunity to return there, in any case, I was adopted by my mother’s close friend, a Betazoid woman named Shaheen Nandiroi-Ek’Tal, a medical doctor, and her wife, an Andorian woman named Oro’Sha-la Ek’Tal, a warp systems theoretician and matter-anti-matter engineer. My foster mothers formally adopted me, which is why my name combines Vulcan and Andorian forms. It is purely coincidental my Andorian surname is also the Vulcan word for “science.” My foster mothers did their best to raise me as a Vulcan, even employing an elderly Vulcan astrophysicist named Syvar to teach me the ways of C’Thia, logic, meditation, and culture, during the time we lived on Mervidiam. When I was 8 standard years-old, in 2396, my foster mothers had a second child, my sister Sher Cait-La Ek’Tal. As a Betazoid-Andorian hybrid her gestation and birth were not easy. She appears mostly Andorian, though her integument is more turquoise than blue. Also, she developed with rudimentary antennae that had to undergo in-utero retro-genetic remediation to be fully functional, though she still requires an external cybernetic enhancer. She is a highly capable empath and is studying to become a psychotherapist and counselor. In 2402, at the age of 14 standard years, I was sent to Vulcan to live with Syvar’s granddaughter, T’Kali, while I attended the Vulcan Science Academy. Though I was quite a bit older than the usual matriculating student, I received advanced placement due to my upbringing and the fact that I published my first scientific paper at the age of 9 standard years. Due to the loss of my parents at an early age, my Betazoid and Andorian parenting far from Vulcan, and despite the best efforts of Syvar, I have never entirely mastered Vulcan C’Thia. My time at the Science Academy was difficult due to my non-Vucan behavioral quirks. Nonetheless, my abilities could not be questioned; I had been raised as a scientist, by scientists, among scientists, since my earliest days. I graduated with laureate firsts in astrophysics, planetary science, and xenobiology, with additional sub-degrees in warp drive theory and engineering (this latter more of a hobby than an academic pursuit). Following graduation, I joined the Science Academy’s Planetary Exploratory Service. I spent three years searching for habitable planets as a xenobiology sub-researcher and assistant astrometrics officer. Again, my tendency exhibit non-Vulcan behavioral traits hindered my social acceptance. I was sent back to Vulcan to train in the ways of Kolinahr. I spent five years trying to suppress my emotions and learn to be a proper Vulcan. Though I did learn much and mastered much, I ultimately failed. Twice. After it was made clear that I was not going to advance in the Academy due to my inability to achieve Kolinahr, it was suggested I join Starfleet. I have done so and am currently serving as an Ot-Lan (Lieutenant), Fei Tal-lan (Chief Science Officer), yel-tor-talsu (astrophysicist), and vath-ek’tra-talsu (planetologist) on the United Federation Starship USS Shogun-A. | ||||||||||||||
